Time-tested Martial Arts

Practical Self-defense, Fitness and Personal Development

Since 1979, we've been teaching authentic martial arts in northern Rhode Island. Our belief that martial arts should be focused on practical skills has earned us a reputation as a school with integrity and a place you can join with confidence.

Over the years our students have included law enforcement officers, federal agents, security professionals, moms, dads and kids. Many of our students have effectively used their skills in actual self defense situations.

So...What makes Palace Hand so different?

Palace Hand was created for the ancient battlefield and for controlling civil unrest. It was designed for dismantling

unruly crowds where everyone had some type of weapon.

In contrast, most commercially available martial arts are designed for one-against-one sporting contests. In sport martial arts opponents are of similar weight and rank, there are no weapons and there are extensive rules. Think...judo, karate, Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu,

taekwondo, MMA etc...

Our authentic Okinawan martial arts featuring karate (Okinawa Kenpo, not in any way related to American kenpo)) and jujitsu (Udundi, or palace hand). These methods compliment each other very well making a diverse and powerful self-defense method.

Our main practice is called Udundi. It is an esoteric art little-known outside Japan. We focus on this style specifically because it is very relevant for todays self-defense needs.

With the benefit of deep historical roots, it is a proven method.

What will you learn?

You will learn a very fast and fluid striking system using fists, open hands, elbows, knees and feet. You will learn joint locks, chokes, take-downs, throws and submission restraints.

You'll begin by learning defenses and counters to common types of assaults (this is why so many of our former students have been successful in defending themselves). As you progress you will learn more diverse skills that can provide you with the confidence and ability to adapt to any type of situation.

Here are some of the differences...

Palace Hand skills allow a smaller person to defeat someone larger and stronger because it does not rely upon physical strength. Instead you will learn to use the opponents force and weaknesses against him. It is ideal for women or anyone who may have to face a larger opponent.

Palace Hand is specialized for multiple attacker situations. You'll learn to move with fluidity and posses techniques with the capability of dispatching one attacker while positioning oneself advantageously against another attacker.

There are no special 'knife, gun or club techniques'.

All techniques are designed to be effective against a weapon, seen or unseen.

Classes are safe and you will be provided personalized instruction. We laugh and have fun. We help each other and we keep the egos out of our practice.

You don't need to be young, flexible or in shape to start. You just need to show up with an open mind and jump in!

Come down and watch a class or try one. Talk to us about your concerns. We'll never pressure you to join and we will help understand what it is that we do.

We hope to see you soon!
